Common in traditional neighbourhoods of cities like Kashan or Yazd in Iran are these underground water storage facilities known as Ab Anbar where residents could fetch their drinking water at the bottom of steep stairs reaching far underground. Behind the dome is visible the top of a windtower which funnelled cooling winds to the stored water.
